A Sojourner's Meditation
II Corinthians 2:14-17
2:14 Now thanks [be] unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place.
In the preceding verses of this chapter (12-13) Paul recalled his gospel journeys. In so doing, he remembered how God had opened a door to him preach the gospel of Jesus Christ--and that made him happy. Paul well knew the trials and tribulations he suffered for the gospels sake and how the Lord delivered him OUT OF THEM ALL.Psalms 34:19 MANY are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.
For the gospel worker, it is a time of rejocing to consider how the Lord has opened doors of ministry unto us. King Jesus ALWAYS causeth us to TRIUMPH--TRI'UMPH, n. [L. triumphus.] State of being victorious; To celebrate victory; to rejoice for victory. Joy or exultation for success; To obtain victory, conquest; A advantage gained; To be prosperous; to flourish.
God Himself uses us to make manifest the savour of HIS knowledge. When I say "us" I am talking about a TRUE gospel worker, not a false worker sowing lies. God uses the true worker to manifest HIS [GOD'S] KNOWLEDGE according to HIS WORD--NOT the traditions of man or something that we made up because we didn't understand or study the scriptures.
There are not many true workers out there. Many are working but they are not true because they are not putting in hard study of God's word coupled with prayer and obedience. They are not disseminating true knowledge. They have a form and appearance of godliness, but their words and doctrines have no power. They think they are doing God service because they say the name of "Jesus", when in actuality, they are greatly helping the cause of Satan. They have not studied the word and they are simply disseminating what they read in some book or heard from some media preacher. Many try to be a gospel workers when they have not been born again or do not know the doctrine for themselves. That is why they get frustrated and think there is nothing to being a Christian. Just because a person knows some lingo does not mean that they are a gospel worker sent from God. Let us not talk about things/knowledge that is outside of our measure, let us just talk about those things that we KNOW from study of the word. For instance, if a person has not studied end time events FOR THEMSELVES, they do not need to try to explain it to anyone else peradventure they be found a false witness of God. Don't just go with Scofield, Larkin, Hagee, LaHaye, or whoever.
In today's church world, everybody wants to be a spiritual giant but don't nobody want TO PUT IN THE TIME. People don't want to study the word, sacrifice, go to the closet, let go of the world, etc. They are not qualified to teach, but they don't want to be a student. Isn't that something? We need to be quiet, repent, get serious, and cultivate a relationship with the Lord. After we are RIGHT THEN we can testify to somebody else.
Be like the Bereans and search the scriptures for yourself so that you diseminate TRUE knowledge. Then God can use you to make manifest the SAVOUR OF HIS KNOWLEDGE. The word "savour" refers to a good taste or smell and in this instance, it speaks to the essential essence of God's knowledge. It is a sweet smell and well pleasing. When you put in the study time and are qualified, THEN when you do the work of the Lord, you will have His unction, anointing and blessing. It will be a great rejoicing to you.
2:15 For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish:
To God we are a sweet savour of Christ. King Jesus is in us and it is by reason of HIS comeliness that we are pleasing to the Father--whereas once I was A STINK to Him and to the earth herself. The works of a true gospel worker are a sweet savour to the Lord whether people accept the gospel or not. My success is not based on how many converts I see respond to the gospel. My success is based on me proclaiming the precepts of the gospel AS THEY ARE WRITTEN. Not making up doctrines but rather broadcasting doctrine just the way the Holy Ghost indited it. Whether our listeners get saved, or whether they go to hell, God accepts our sacrifice of sharing the gospel in this underworld. It smells good to Him either way because we are manifesting TRUE knowledge and we are doing it in Christ Jesus. The time for ignorance of the word is over. We need to know the truth so that we can tell it.
2:16 To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things?
To those who reject the gospel, we stink. We are repugnant like the sulfur, fire and brimstone that singes and stings the noses of them that perish. We smell like some DEATH and HELL to them. The gospel message greatly aggravates and stirs up their corrupt passions within them. We repulse and bother them GREATLY. We're like the brimstone of hell to them--suffocating, stifling. Brimstone is sulphur:BRIM'STONE, n. Sulphur; a hard, brittle, inflammable substance, of a lemon yellow color, which has no smell, unless heated, and which becomes negatively electric by heat and friction. It is found, in great quantities, and sometimes pure, in the neighborhood of volcanoes.
SUL'PHUR, n. [L.] A simple combustible mineral substance, of a yellow color, brittle, insoluble in water, but fusible by heat. It is called also brimstone, that is, burn-stone, from its great combustibility. It burns with a blue flame and A PECULIAR SUFFOCATING ODOR.
just add a little heat, a true witness to the gospel message
and the wicked will be up in arms. A true witness will light 'em up.
To the others, we are the savour of life unto life. The gospel messages sounds so good, life-giving, and refreshing to the others. They love us because we have told them the message of a merciful Father God and His all-powerful Son Christ Jesus. They repent and are born again. We smell better than roses to them and they want to hug us and help us. We joy in Christ together and are drawn together in Christian love and friendship and charity.
2:17 For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.
TRUE gospel workers are not like the MANY who corrupt the word. We are the TRUE. The ones that REALLY do know the Lord and REALLY do read His word and REALLY do rightly divide it. God is a God of TRUTH and TRUE workers are of GOD. They know their God, they are strong and they do exploits (Daniel 11:32). They live their lives before God and seek HIS approval, NOT the approval of man. There are things that they do not do because they are TOO SCARED to sin against God.
The natural man scoffs at our fear for he is glad to be given over to all his corruptions. Meanwhile, we are recognize that our fear of God keeps us safe, happy, and in the paths of righteousness. I am scared of falling off of a cliff--that keeps me from getting too close to the edge. Fear is a good thing--fear of God will give you life. We use the word of God lawfully--fulfilling it and speaking it in the sight of God IN CHRIST--not outside Christ on our corrupt own--IN CHRIST. Our lives are hid IN CHRIST. Jesus means something to us--in fact, He is everything and we have abandoned (with holy violence) what we were to become what He wants us to be.
Written Saturday, August 17, 2002, after prayer ~2:08 pm. Big Daddy and Chloe are gone. Awoke early this am with my soul vexed by the unrighteous deeds of the lawless...abortion, child abuse...the Lord directed me back to my position as a gospel worker. I cannot let grief move me from position and He sent His word to confirm my work. If I stay in position, people will be delivered, and lawless deeds against God will decrease person by person. Jesus is The Answer.
